What inspired you to start your business? How did your business get started?
Northampton Neighbors was started by a group of people who had read “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande, and decided that Northampton would be a good place to create a virtual “Village” for aging in our own homes.
Tell us a little bit about your business.

Northampton Neighbors exists so that people who live in Northampton can age in their own homes rather than having to move into an institution as our parents often did when they got older.

We are a volunteer organization helping each other with small neighborly services and tasks, becoming friends, reaching out to each other (especially to those who may be isolated, frail, or in some way underserved), and developing a sense of community together.

We also have interest groups (hiking, gardening, knitting, etc) and regular social gatherings in our neighborhoods and at city-wide locations to increase friendship and connection among members.

Unlike most other Villages around the country, we charge no membership fee, since we want to be widely inclusive and available to everyone in Northampton, Florence and Leeds.

We currently have 525 members, and that number increases every week, mainly through word of mouth.

What is your favorite thing to do in your business?
I love making connections with new members, finding out about their interests, talents, and life experiences. They enrich Northampton Neighbors and our whole Northampton community.
If nothing else, what is the one piece of information you want someone to know about your business?
We welcome new members from throughout the City and charge no membership fee.
What is the one piece of business advice you would like to share?
In order to sustain ourselves financially, we have created a “culture of giving,” encouraging individuals (if they can afford it) and local businesses to become Sustainers, donating generously to our community through Northampton Neighbors.
